Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4th, 1972. Scott was raised by her grandmother as an only daughter by her grandmother. Scott went to her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls followed by Temple University after graduating. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs while she was studying secondary education. She was hoping to become a high-school English teacher. However, her dream was in vain when she left the college after a year of study and became a teachers' aide. She began her career as a spoken-word artist, performing her own work during live poetry readings. She later joined forces to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their collaborative song was written by them. She came out during the Roots performance. In the following years, she managed to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to gain experience in performing arts through the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She was hired by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
